Imitation in Self-Reliance A Paradox - Literature Essay Samples
Ralph Waldo Emerson was a highly acclaimed philosopher, among other achievements. With a firm transcendentalist mindset, Emerson wrote a number of essays dedicated to the transcendentalist movement of the 19th century; one of which was Self-Reliance. In this thought-provoking text, Emerson expresses his opinions on a number of topics which revolve around the subject of ââ¬Å"self-relianceâ⬠in an oracular and authoritative manner. His self-assured statements therefore may come off as unreasonable at times, and even contradictory. This essay will look into two quotes from Self-Reliance which appear to be inconsistent with one another, and then attempt to harmonize the two by examining Emersonââ¬â¢s messages in depth. One of the major topics Emerson discusses in Self-Reliance is ââ¬Å"imitationâ⬠and how this negatively affects civilisation. It is brought to light in the second paragraph of his entire essay, and from the very first line of which readers are able to disc ern his views on the matter, as he straightforwardly writes, ââ¬Å"There is a time in every manââ¬â¢s education when he arrives at the conviction â⬠¦ that imitation is suicide.â⬠In very simple words Emerson conveys his standpoint. He goes on to elaborate on the ignorance of imitation, insisting that society demands conformity out of every man and therefore by imitation we conform and stray from individuality ââ¬â which he calls our ââ¬Å"geniusâ⬠ââ¬â and so suffer from losing ourselves, which is similar to suicide. Emerson fundamentally repeats this notion throughout his essay: ââ¬Å"Insist on yourself; never imitateâ⬠is only one of a copious of instances where he emphasizes on the importance of rejecting imitation. However, towards the end of his essay, when he begins to list final topics for scrutiny ââ¬â such as issues of prayer, society and progress ââ¬â Emerson brings back the matter of imitation while elaborating on his point number ed ââ¬Å"3â⬠, where he criticizes the concept of travel. Here he states, ââ¬Å"We imitate; and what is imitation but the travelling of the mind?â⬠after denouncing men who travel ââ¬Å"to be amusedâ⬠and declaring that travel is, on the whole, an absolutely unnecessary act. At first glance, it appears as if this second quote regarding imitation contradicts the first, giving the impression that ââ¬Å"the travelling of the mindâ⬠is similar to meditation, whereby the brain travels to distant places without leaving the physical comfort of oneââ¬â¢s home. Since he proclaims that ââ¬Å"the soul is no traveller: the wise man stays at home with the soul,â⬠it is evident that Emerson believes that ââ¬Å"wise menâ⬠do not need to leave their homes to seek beauty or knowledge, as they are able to do so at home and solely through imagination. This is exemplified when Emerson states, ââ¬Å"At home I dream that at Naples, at Rome, I can be intoxicated with beauty, and lose my sadness.â⬠Thus, it seems as though to support this conviction, he writes, ââ¬Å"Our minds travel when we are forced to stay at home. We imitate; and what is imitation but the travelling of the mind?â⬠Now it appears that Emerson is in favour of imitation, as i t is what allows our minds to travel without leaving our homes, as wise men do. However, as he continues on this explanation, Emerson describes the use of imitation in the features of ââ¬Å"our housesâ⬠, proclaiming that people imitate foreign tastes, such as the Doric or Gothic architecture, in the design of buildings. He also mentions that ââ¬Å"our shelves are garnished with foreign ornamentsâ⬠, which highlights our habit to imitate foreign art and beauty, and to essentially mould our lives to resemble those of non-native lands. Emerson explains this in blatant disapproval, summarizing his point by stating that Americans can find beauty far closer than they think, and so do not require travelling abroad to find inspiration for art. With this, it is obvious that Emerson once again scorns imitation. To sum up, the quote, ââ¬Å"what is imitation but the travelling of the mind?â⬠does not actually support imitation. Although it appears that Emerson advocates travel ling with the mental capacity and not physically traversing about, in this quote he means that ââ¬Å"the travelling of the mindâ⬠is similar to the unnecessary wandering of it. Emerson firmly dictates the needlessness of travelling abroad, as people cannot help but glorify the distinctiveness of foreign parts rather than celebrating the beauty and art that surrounds them in their native land. He supports this by mentioning that even while travelling to Naples in his mind, he realises the ââ¬Å"stern fact, the sad self, unrelenting, identicalâ⬠which he ââ¬Å"fled fromâ⬠is still there beside him. This means that in spite of travelling far away, he cannot flee from his problems, and he implies the same for all mankind. Thus, the two quotes which initially appear contradictory are in fact relaying a similar message: imitation is unfavourable and obstructive in all aspects of life, be it in everyday life or in travel; to our souls and to our homes, and so should be co ndemned wholeheartedly.

John Stewart Mill s Theory Of Utility - 3157 Words
John Stewart Mill formed his theory of utility in his essay Utilitarianism. His first principle was based on the notion mankind had no ultimate standard of morality; Thus, human beings have not agreed upon a universal code of behavior with which to examine and criticize laws imposed on a society. Mill stated his theory of utility could be used to judge the morality of all actions. Although the non-existence of an acknowledged first principle has made ethics not so much a guide as a consecration of menââ¬â¢s actual sentiments, still, as menââ¬â¢s sentiments, both of favor and of aversion, are greatly influenced by what they suppose to be the effects of things upon their happiness, the principle of utility, or as Bentham latterly called it, the greatest happiness principle, has had a large share in forming the moral doctrines even of those who most scornfully reject its authority. (Mill. Utilitarianism) He deduced his theory and principle of utility was the basic structure that a ll ethical doctrines were formed by; no text explicitly stated his fundamental first principle as the ââ¬Å"source for moral obligationâ⬠. Mill emphasized the principle of utility was the fundamental principle of morality, though no ethical doctrines gave attention to the effect of actions on happiness. (Pg. 7. Mill. Utilitarianism). He compared his theory with the Metaphysics of Ethics by Kant, citing its ââ¬Å"universal first principle as the origin of and ground of moral obligationâ⬠; it is this: ââ¬Å"So act, that theShow MoreRelatedAn Introduction to the Principles of Morals and Legislation by Jeremey Bentham.1026 Words à |à 5 PagesUtilitarianism? Negative Effects Of Autobiographical Memory - 1065 Words
First-year university students are prone to stressful environments. Being away from home for the first time would often elicit negative feelings, especially loneliness and sadness. But what happens when oneââ¬â¢s mood is consistently negative? According to the DSM-5, symptoms of clinical depression include feeling sad, or hopeless, having diminished pleasure, and having feelings of worthlessness and guilt, nearly everyday for at least 2 weeks. In simpler words, depression is a constant experience of negative emotion. This mindset would bias personal experiences, in particular, autobiographical memory. It should be noted that the depressed patients did not intentionally disobey the instructions; rather, the patients unintentionally and unconsciously gave general descriptions of memory. Another metanalysis also finds that, when prompted, people that depressive symptoms will tend to give general memories, especially when the memories are negative (Talarowska, Berk, Maes, GaÃ
âecki, 2016). This may be due to the fact that emotional regulative mechanisms in the autobiographical memory will try to reduce levels of stress due to negative emotions by blocking recollection, leading to a less specific recollection. Interestingly enough, this is also shown in patients with PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). A modern replication of these findings were done where the researchers divided participants into high or low moods based on their scores on the MAACL-R (Multiple Affect Adjective Checklist-Revised) (Moffitt et al., 1994). The participants were divided on mood scores, not on diagnosed clinical depression. Fiction Analysis Essay - 710 Words
Fiction Analysis There are many ways to supplement a story in order to add lucidity. It is done through literary devices and Tim OBriens The Things They Carried is no different. The Things They Carried is a narrative about a soldier at war in Vietnam. However, this story provides multiple layers of meaning through OBriens tone and style that help the reader further understand it. Both of these literary devices are embedded in the story and gradually help define it. To begin with, OBrien writes this short story in a very serious tone. There is no joking with him, unless in dialogue. For instance, OBrien demonstrates this serious tone when he writes After the chopper took... They burned everything (440). This tone then helpsâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The excessive mentioning of weights pulls the reader down. He or she experiences the burden OBrien is writing about and can therefore further understand the stress each soldier is under. He also writes about what personal items each so ldier carries, such as Rat Kileys (433) comic books and Lt. Crosss letter from Martha (434). In doing so the reader can grasp the humanity of each soldier and enable the reader to engage in the characters on a more personal level, making the possibility of losing one of the soldiers all the more grim. Additionally, OBriens tone and style together create an ominous environment. The serious tone combines with his style on page 434 to convey a message that almost threatens the reader. The combined weight of the things each soldier carries takes its toll on the reader. Already feeling pulled down, OBrien adds statements such as the land was mined and booby-trapped and you could die so quickly. The ominous environment is further described with the nights were cold... the monsoons were wet. OBrien then proceeds to mention how the plastic poncho meant to help the men is also what is used to carry Ted Lavender after being shot. Drug Testing for TANF Recipients - 1020 Words
Drug Testing for TANF Recipients Drug problems costs the US billions of dollars every year from disease, crime, accidents, child abuse, domestic violence, homelessness, and lost wages that causes deaths and other serious economic and social consequences (Hunter). The crimes include stealing, drug trafficking, murder, robbery, domestic violence, breaking and entering, child abuse and neglect, and assault. Health care problems, such as overdoses, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, and tuberculosis, are often results of substance abuse. Requiring drug testing of TANF recipients who are at risk for drug abuse is a step in the right direction to help addicts overcome addiction, gain employment, and become responsible citizens in society. It also helps efforts in the long term to deter drug abuse costs of healthcare, law enforcement, and prisons where addicts usually resort to crime to support their habits. High costs come from children often being placed in foster care where 50 to 80% of child abuse and neglect cases result from substance abuse and high medical costs where 75% of domestic violence cases were a result of alcohol and drug addiction (Hunter). There are often more costs if a spouse and children are placed in domestic violence centers to keep them safe from the abuse that comes from addiction. Are Single Parent Homes a Dysfunctional Model of Family
Are Single Parent Homes a Dysfunctional Model of Family? According to a recent study from CBS, the United States has the highest divorce rate of any country at 45%. Due to this high rate of divorce, many families find that there is an imbalance of family roles in these newly created single parent households. Being a single parent has its own set of challenges for the individual and creates challenges for the family such as, spending smaller amounts of time with your children, having an excessive work load and disrupting the wellbeing of the children. Often times, single parents find that they are unable to spend as much time with their children. As stated in the International Encyclopedia of Marriage and Family, ââ¬Å"children in single parent homes tend to have higher absentee reports and higher dropout ratesâ⬠. Children of single parent households may find that they do not feel as close to the parent that they live with. This can be because the children are a different gender than the parent or because the parent has increased the childrenââ¬â¢s responsibilities. Children that are a different gender than the parent that they live with may find that they are unable to confide in or ask questions of that parent due to the gender difference. An example of this could be that a daughter raised by her father may miss out on advice that only a mother can give. Children of single parent households may also find an increase in their responsibilities as the single parent is no longer able to perform all the household duties that they were able to prior to becoming a single parent household. The Cask Of Amontillado Lit Analysis Essay free essay sample
The Cask Of Amontillado: Lit. Analysis Essay, Research Paper Clint Kale 11/22/97 Literary Analysis Literary Analysis: The Cask of Amontillado In Edgar Allan Poe # 8217 ; s short narrative, # 8220 ; The Cask of Amontillado, # 8221 ; a character named Montresor vows retaliation on the adult male who insulted him excessively many times. You might admiration why he wants to be avenged so severely. This literary analysis will demo grounds of why Montresor killed Fortunato. Toward the beginning of the narrative Montresor appears to be a brainsick adult male. He lets the reader know that when he says # 8220 ; I continued, as was my habit, to smile in his face, and he did non comprehend that my smiling now was at the idea of his immolation # 8221 ; 1 ( pg. 703 ) . This leads you to believe that the full program of slaying Fortunato was pre- meditated. Montresor knows that acquiring ultimate retaliation on Fortunato has to be done with impunity. If there was any opportunity Fortunato could acquire back at him, he would non be successful. The thought of killing Fortunato is one of the lone ways a individual could demand retaliation with impunity. Montresor decides to utilize the vino vault as Fortunato # 8217 ; s concluding resting topographic point. Clint Kale Pg. 2 This is dry because Fortunato is good known as an expert in vino. When Fortunato starts coughing Montresor urges him to travel back ; this lone makes Field-grade officer rtunato want the cask more. Montresor answers, # 8220 ; You are rich, respected, admired, beloved ; you are happy, as one time I was # 8230 ; # 8220 ; You are a adult male to be missed. # 8221 ; # 8220 ; For me it is no affair # 8221 ; ( pg. 704 ) . Montresor is acrimonious, discredited and likely covetous of Fortunato from the grounds of these quotation marks. The coat of weaponries in the Montresor household is one of the biggest hints as to why he killed Fortunato. Montresor describes to Fortunato the image of his weaponries: # 8220 ; A immense human pes vitamin D # 8217 ; or, in a field cerulean ; the pes crushes a serpent rampant whose Fangs are imbedded in the heel # 8221 ; ( pg. 705 ) . This is symbolic of the full narrative. Montresor is the snake and Fortunato is the pes. Fortunato may hold trounced upon his feelings but Montresor will hold the last laugh when Fortunato becomes poisoned. Toward the terminal of the narrative, the reader knows why Montresor killed Fortunato. He now does non look like the same brainsick individual he was at the beginning of the narrative. Although he does kill Fortunato, Montresor keeps a really methodical attack to making so. Montresor # 8217 ; s coat of weaponries slogan is # 8220 ; Nemo me impune lacessit # 8221 ; ( pg. 705 ) . Which means # 8220 ; No 1 insults me with impunity. # 8221 ; This means Montresor is following his household motto absolutely. Which makes it clear why Montresor killed Fortunato. He was protecting the award in his household.

I am very motivated by challenges and always look for opportunities to solve problems. Challenges intrigue me because they show me how far I am willing to go. No one can meet every challenge, but I strive to do the best I can and not repeat mistakes. I realize this is a high standard, but I donââ¬â¢t know any other way. In life, situations repeat themselves. The ability to learn from oneââ¬â¢s mistakes and solve them is as important as anything. I challenge myself to solve every problem. From an academic standpoint, I can often be found looking at the same math problem for 30 minutes. It might appear that I am doing nothing. Contrarily, I meticulously work through every possibility. For every problem, there is always a right answer and I constantly strive to find that answer. Furthermore, I will do everything in my power to win. U.S Constitution Ratification Debates Essays - James Madison
U.S Constitution Ratification Debates On September 28, 1787, after three days of bitter debate, the Confederation Congress sent the Constitution to the states with neither an endorsement nor a condemnation. This action, a compromise engineered by Federalist members, disposed of the argument that the convention had exceeded its mandate; in the tacit opinion of Congress, the Constitution was validly before the people. The state legislatures' decisions to hold ratifying conventions confirmed the Constitution's legitimacy. The ratification controversy pitted supporters of the Constitution, who claimed the name Federalists, against a loosely organized group known as Antifederalists. The Antifederalists denounced the Constitution as a radically centralizing document that would destroy American liberty and betray the principles of the Revolution. The Federalists urged that the nation's problems were directly linked to the frail, inadequate Confederation and that nothing short of the Constitution would enable the American people to preserve their liberty and independence, the fruits of the Revolution. The Federalists - led by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, John Jay, John Marshall, James Wilson, John Dickinson, and Roger Sherman - had several advantages. In a time of national political crisis, they offered a clear prescription for the nation's ills; they were well organized and well financed; and they were used to thinking in national terms and to working with politicians from other states. They also had the support of the only two truly national political figures, George Washington and Benjamin Franklin. The Antifederalists - led by Patrick Henry, George Mason, Richard Henry Lee, James Monroe, John Hancock, Samuel Adams, Elbridge Gerry, George Clinton, Willie Jones, and Melancton Smith - counted among their advantages the support of most state Ratification debates politicians and the American people's distrust of strong central government. Their most potent argument against the Constitution was that it lacked a bill of rights. The lively newspaper and pamphlet war over the Constitution was a key element of the ratification controversy. Federalists and Antifederalists published hundreds of essays praising or denouncing the document. They often signed these essays with pseudonyms drawn from classical sources such as Plutarch's Lives or from the seventeenth-century English struggles against the tyranny of the Stuart kings. Notable Antifederalist pamphlets included the Letters of Brutus, attributed to Robert Yates; Luther Martin's Genuine Information; Mercy Otis Warren's Observations on the New Constitution ... by a Colombian Patriot; and the Letters from the Federal Farmer to the Republican, whose authorship is still disputed. Every state but Rhode Island elected a ratifying convention in 1787-1788, and only North Carolina's adjourned (August 2, 1788, by a vote of 185-84) without voting on the Constitution. (Rhode Island submitted the Constitution to its town meetings; on March 24, 1788, in a vote boycotted by most Federalists, the voters rejected it, 2,708-237.) The first five ratifications took place in quick succession: Delaware, December 7, 1787 (unanimous); Pennsylvania, December 12, 1787 (46-23); New Jersey, December 18, 1787 (unanimous); Georgia, January 2, 1788 (unanimous); and Connecticut, January 9, 1788 (128-40). In Massachusetts, however, the Constitution ran into serious, organized opposition. Only after two leading Antifederalists, Adams and Hancock negotiated a far-reaching compromise did the convention vote for ratification on February 6, 1788 (187-168). Antifederalists had demanded that the Constitution be amended before they would Ratification debates consider it or that amendments be a condition of ratification; Federalists had retorted that it had to be accepted or rejected as it was. Under the Massachusetts compromise, the delegates recommended amendments to be considered by the new Congress, should the Constitution go into effect. The Massachusetts compromise determined the fate of the Constitution, as it permitted delegates with doubts to vote for it in the hope that it would be amended. All subsequent state conventions but Maryland's recommended amendments as part of their decisions to ratify: Maryland, April 28, 1788 (63-11); South Carolina, May 23, 1788 (149-73); New Hampshire, June 21, 1788 (57-47); Virginia, June 25, 1788 (89-79); and New York, July 26, 1788 (30-27). By that date, eleven states had ratified, including all four critical states. The lists of recommended amendments and the Federalists' promise to work for amendments (particularly a bill of rights), set in motion the process by which the Bill of Rights was added to the Constitution in 1789-1791. In turn, the

Marketing Essays - Marketing, Business, Free Essays, Term Papers Marketing * Evaluate her strategy planning for her new business. >From her love to stay in Petosky; she started the carpet cleaning service by her saving money, and based on her experience when she worked part-time for Joel Bullard. Mr. Bullard has a very successful business at this small town, dominates this carpet cleaning service, and so far no one able to compete to him in quality, strong relationship with many loyalty clients. Jane Galloway try so hard in advertising, taking care of her customer?s work but she still unable to reach her goal, $60,000/year. * Why was not she able to reach her goal of $60,000/year? The most important problem of Jane is she did not do any marketing research in potential need of customers, she tries to sell the service she has rather the customer need. First, she should do marketing to know this business saturated at this town or not?. It seems to me that this small town just needs some extra works in the peak seasons as summers and winters. Second, she should study to know her competitions and what she should do to compete with them in quality, prices, customer?s relationship?. Third, from lack of marketing the potential need of customer; she set her goal is too high and spends too much energy to reach her target. * What should she do now? Explain. I think she can have two choices: - First, if she wants to stay in Petosky; she should set her goal more reasonable. She can maintain her good work as quality and advertising; but she should have a more competing price with Mr. Bullard, builds up a strong relationship with customers. She will have a larger share with Mr. Bullard, and able to compete with him in the future. - Second, she should do marketing study at another town for these matters: Potential need of customer, price, service and quality of current competitions. She will carefully check her ability to compete with them; then based on those conclusions, she will choose a right place to move her business, and have a successful business.

Operations Management Principles - The operational Management Essay
Operations Management Principles - The operational Management Challenge at the Inditex Group - Essay Example This report highlights the operational management challenges at Inditex, as well as successes in providing fast fashion merchandise to many different target markets, to determine how Inditex remains a clothing manufacturing leader among many different competitive entities internationally and within the European environment. Operational objectives and competitive advantages The goal of Inditex is to provide fast fashion merchandise, meaning that there is a rapid turnaround of existing inventory to ensure that the majority of clothing products do not have to be held in inventory, thereby reducing costs in inventory management. Inditex understands that fashion merchandise, especially with the younger markets most attracted to Inditex fashions, maintain a very short life cycle. In Zara, as one example, virtually every piece of merchandise is on display, with Zara holding only a few key pieces of the same piece of fashion products, thereby creating an image of exclusivity for discriminati ng customers (Ferdows, Lewis and Machuca 2003). Having an understanding of the industry and product lifestyles are absolutely critical as it provides the knowledge necessary to develop worthwhile future operational strategies (Ha-Brookshire and Lee 2010). The majority of Inditexââ¬â¢s fashion stores are still in the growth stage along the industry life cycle, an environment in which the global supply chain for fashion merchandise has increased the total volume of available smaller and larger production entities and where strategic alliances along the supply chain are becoming more well-developed. Therefore, the supply environment in the aforementioned growth stage provides Inditex with unique opportunities to procure raw materials that give Inditex the ability to have a rapid turnaround of fashion merchandise. What is unique about Inditex is that the company is able to move from the design phase to tangible, in-store delivery of finished fashion merchandise much more rapidly than its many other competitors. This is what provides Inditex with the significant competitive advantage. For instance, Zara maintains an in-house staff of approximately 300 designers who consistently upgrade current season fashions and work toward designing the next supply of fast fashion, unique merchandise (Ferdows, et al. 2003). The ability to procure enough raw materials to begin production within a 4-6 week lead time is unparalleled in the industry, supported by Inditexââ¬â¢s ability to produce 50 percent of its total fashion volume within its many self-owned production facilities (Ferdows, et al.). Hence, whilst Inditex is busy designing merchandise along its operational model, in-house production experts and a variety of outsourced garment producers (especially sewing capabilities) are working consistently on producing new and innovative fashions along the short lead time. Other competition in the industry have lead times that can be up to six months, thereby giving Zara con siderable competitive advantages over the majority of its fashion competitors. The aforesaid is the operational objective of Zara: to align its operational strategies and production capabilities to meet the strategic objective of exclusive fashion merchandising and production. The organisation,

IKEA in China Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words
IKEA in China - Essay Example The corporations decide to enter into new country to capture the new market and in this process they primarily focus cross cultural factors for building multicultural teams. However, they have to face several difficulties due to mismatch of organisation culture and social culture (Rajagopal, 2007, p.8). This paper will attempt to analyse distinct features of cross cultural differences affecting international trade in context of IKEAââ¬â¢s business in China. To offer basic understandings and interpretations of cross cultural difference, some relevant models and concepts will be critically analysed and discussed. This paper will also include the basic difference of Swedish and Chinese cultures. Role of expatriate managers in managing multi-national corporations will also be discussed. Finally, the paper will end by summing up the entire discussions and findings. IKEA is a privately-owned global furniture company. It is a Sweden-based company and founded by Ingvar Kamprad who started to sell matches at the age of seven during 1920. During 1940-1950, he entered into the furniture business and the business experienced a rapid growth within a short span of time (IKEA-a, 2010). Currently, it offers large varieties of furniture for domestic and commercial purposes. It also provides furniture for children (IKEA-b, 2010). IKEA has expanded its business in the global market and it is present in the entire Europe, North America, Middle East and Asia pacific regions. The business idea of IKEA focuses on its core value, product range, low price and betterment of everyday life of its valuable consumers (IKEA-c, 2010). Business and culture are inter-related with other and hence, before presenting critical analysis of cross culture, expatriate management and multicultural operations. The national culture is the prime factor that affects the culture of an organisation and its behaviour.

Leadership and Change in Nursing
Leadership and Change in Nursing Leadership and Change Kym Bell I have chosen to use Jersey College in Trenton, New Jersey for my leadership change project. Jersey College is an educational nursing program that provides the combination of Licensed Practical nursing (LPN); Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and bridge programs for Registered Nurses (RN). The college is located in an urban setting with the student body predominantly from lower income families. The college provides, ââ¬Å"education for adults through an open curriculum that accommodates diverse lifestylesâ⬠(Jersey College, 2014). The school prides itself on being the conduit to provide diverse opportunities for Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA), LPNââ¬â¢s, RNââ¬â¢s. The program provides the opportunity for LPNââ¬â¢s and RNââ¬â¢s to acquire a BSN. Jersey College was founded in 2003 and was originally called The Center for Allied Health Nursing Education. In 2004, the LPN program was approved by the New Jersey Board of Nursing. Since opening in 2004, the school has grown to incorporate two New Jersey campuses and two Florida campuses. The school is affiliated with many institutions who provide a variety of other educational opportunities for students (Jersey College, 2014, p. 1). In the past few years, there has been a decrease in the availability of nursing faculties and training sites for nursing students. This has increased the need for nursing instructors to look at alternative clinical sites. A variety of clinical sites are needed to provide students diverse learning and training opportunities. These practice opportunities are needed to prepare students to become independent professional heath care workers. One solution to this problem is to establish a virtual skills laboratory software program. The stakeholders for this project will be the college, instructors, students, parents, and the future communities that these students will be working in. Organizational Structure There is an organizational structure that depicts the framework for running Jersey College (Appendix A). There is a board of directors that hold the governing power. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is included in this group. The budget and financial management of the college is overseen by the CEO. The board hires the president of the college. Presently the president of Jersey College is Steven Litvak. He responsible for organizing, constructing, executing, and assessing the financial aspect of the college. The president is responsible for maintaining and establishing the mission, purpose, and policies of the college. The nursing education department is led by the Dean of Students. The education department is split into the Practical Nursing Program and the Professional Nursing Program. The two combined programs have a budget for educational needs. If a large purchase needs to be approved the department must submit a written request to the Dean of Nursing. The request is then submi tted to the president who then submits the request to the Board of Directors. The school is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education (COE), New Jersey Higher (NJ) Education, and the New Jersey State Board of Nursing (Jersey College, 2014). The department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has supported grants that will sponsor a wide variety of research grants to improve the quality, safety, effectiveness, and efficiency of health care in the use of technology. My plan is to apply for a grant called Faculty development: Integrated technology into nursing education and practice (ITNEP). The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) (2014) offers a grant that provides support to nursing collaboratives for faculty development in the use of information and other technologies in order to expand the capacity of collegiate schools of nursing to educate students for 21st century health care practice. Nursing collaboratives will use health care information systems to enhance nursing education and practice, optimize patient safety, and drive improvements in health care quality (HHS, 2014, para. 1). Assessment of Readiness Jersey College has a very small simulation lab that has very poor ventilation and very few nursing supplies. There are currently two students in my group that have latex allergies and cannot physically work in the skills lab without having allergic reactions. The students often complain that, even though there are many mannequins, there are no simulators that attach to the mannequins. Many of the other machines and supplies are in disrepair. The mannequinsââ¬â¢ teaching capabilities are outdated. Many of them have missing limbs or do not have anatomically correct parts. For example, one of the mannequinââ¬â¢s tracheostomy hole is drilled incorrectly so that the student can only put in the tracheostomy tube upside down. The students do not feel that they are truly getting exposure to best practice in the present skills lab. The cost of replacing the lab has been discussed at many meetings and the concept of implementing a virtual lab has been in committee for the past year. The committee has researched many options and has come up with pros and cons of switching to a virtual lab. With the assistance of community and government funding options, the future of a virtual skills lab appears to be on the horizon. According to the Joint Commission (2014), one of the major causes of a sentinel event in the United States is the lack of communication. This means miscommunication is usually demonstrated in the form of ââ¬Å"wrong patient, wrong site, and wrong procedureâ⬠. A sentinel event is a recurring medical issue within a facility that causes patient harm. The Joint Commission has recognized that many of these errors can be avoided by taking a ââ¬Å"time outâ⬠. The ââ¬Å"time outâ⬠procedure requires a consensus of all healthcare individuals that are involved with the patient. Everyone must stop what they are doing to verify that they have the correct patient; the correct site being assessed; and the correct paperwork/lab results must be verified. Nursing students need to recognize how important it is to verbally and nonverbally communicate with each other to avoid potential medical mistakes. The use of a virtual nursing skills lab can mimic medical situations in a safe and consistent environment. This type of laboratory will provide multiple opportunities for students to interact and communicate with a variety of cyber patients. Nursing students can utilize a virtual environment to learn clinical skills and to practice communication techniques. These skills will be useful when students are interacting with patients, families and other healthcare team members. Currently, the students do not have ample opportunities to access a computer during their class time. Many of the students, over ninety percent, have computers of their own. The nursing program is not currently set up to allow access to class information or other learning materials online. The Dean of Nursing is a very forward thinking person and has petitioned the president to acquire a working virtual laboratory. The Dean and instructors would like to update the schoolââ¬â¢s equipment and keep the facilities modern and technologically savvy. The new program will keep current students up to date and a new virtual laboratory would be a great way to entice new students into the program. Analysis of Data There are many different types of leadership theories, I chose to use Lippettââ¬â¢s Theory of change. This type of theory decrees that a leader is needed to promote the need for change. Lippitt, Watson, Westley (1958) utilized the basics of Lewinââ¬â¢s Theory of Change which included the concept of freeze, unfreezing and refreezing. Lippitt expanded on Lewinââ¬â¢s theory by adding four more steps. Lippitt et al. (1958) discovered that: Maintaining a favorable balance of forces is a continuous job for the change agent and client system, beginning with the initial decision to undertake a change project or helping relationship and continuing until the project has been completed (p. 73). Lippittââ¬â¢s Theory of change has seven phases. Phase 1: Recognize there is a problem The problem is that the current hands-on skills laboratory is out of date and in need of a massive facelift. The cost of this renovation would be staggering to the institution. Phase 2: Assess the motivation and capacity for change The students, as well as faculty, have voiced their opinions that either a new skills hands on laboratory or virtual laboratory needs to be added to enhance the teaching/learning capability of the school. Phase 3: Assess the resources and motivation of the change There is a grant and government funding for the school to replace the current lab with a virtual one. Many of the faculty have gone back to school and have been exposed to new technological advances. Virtual software can provide nursing students with a multitude of learning opportunities that cannot always be accessed in the ââ¬Å"realâ⬠world. The faculty is eager to learn how to work within an online environment. They have stated that they are willing to be instructed in how to run this type of lab. Upper management is willing to put in the time and energy that is necessary to make this change. Phase 4-Design the progressive stages of change The stages that will take place will be: Have a representative, from the selected virtual laboratory software company to come and speak to those staff members that have volunteered to be ââ¬Å"Super Usersâ⬠. Implement a training sessions for ââ¬Å"Super Usersâ⬠. These are fellow colleagues that that are given extensive training to assist others in transitioning to a new product or service. Meet with the nurse managers to provide training using the new laboratory software. Answer all questions and concerns that may affect each individual instructorââ¬â¢s educational needs for each specific laboratory classroom. Provide training sessions for educators to provide each instructor guidelines for the new software. Go ââ¬Å"liveâ⬠with the virtual laboratory software with students. Phase 5: Ensure the role and responsibility of the change agent is clearly understood Clearly identify as many of the problems as possible to fix prior to going ââ¬Å"liveâ⬠with the program. Ensure that everyone that works with this change will have technical backup and support. Confirm that there will be a representative from the company to answer any and all questions. Phase 6: Maintain the change through communication, feedback, and group coordination There will be evaluation forms for managers and students to provide feedback. Users will be surveyed to evaluate any changes that may be needed to support their teaching/learning needs. The evaluation will be an ongoing process. As problems arise, there will be a representative available on site or by telephone to assist any users. Phase 7: Gradually remove the change agent At the initial phase of the project, there will be a representative on site to help anyone who is having trouble accessing or understanding how to navigate the new laboratory software. After the first six or eight weeks, the physical presence of the software company will no longer be on site but, there will always be twenty-four hour telephone support (Lippitt, Watson, Westley, 1958). Plan for Change After careful research, by a chosen committee, a specific software program will be bought by the college. The college is currently looking into the software called ââ¬Å"The Digital Clinical Experienceâ⠢â⬠made by Shadow Health. Farmer (2014) states that there are over four hundred colleges and universities that are currently using this type of software in their nursing programs. The article goes on to state that the Shadow Healthââ¬â¢s program ââ¬Å"is broken down into ten modules, each of which correlate with a body system students study in classâ⬠(Farmer, 2014, para. 10). The acquisition committee has a chairwomen that will contact the software developer and set up a demonstration of the product. The committee members will have the opportunity to talk to one of the four hundred present user sites and observe the software in action. Once the decision has been made to purchase this program, the training will begin. Phase I will be the technical part of installing and updating any computer equipment that the school has. Phase II will be educating and training the instructors and ââ¬Å"Super Usersâ⬠. Phase III will be educating the students and remaining faculty. Phase IV Take the program ââ¬Å"liveâ⬠and start assigning lessons within the software website. There will be follow up meetings and suggestion boxes to evaluate the staff and students feedback in using this new system. The staff and students need to feel like their suggestions and feedback will make a difference in promoting advanced learning. The amount of money it will take to update, install, and train faculty and students will be added into the cost of tuition. The research committee has evaluated the cost and have estimated that the increase in semester cost will be two-hundred and fifty dollars per student. There will be opportunities for students to reduce this cost by applying for grants and/or financial aid. Evaluation As with any change, it will take time and dedication for staff and students to get used to the new software and work within an online environment. There will be an initial survey for students and faculty prior to starting the online learning lab project. After the software has been up and running for six months, a follow up survey will be given to evaluate the studentââ¬â¢s and staffââ¬â¢s perception of the learning quality provided by the software. The students should be aware that there will always be technical support available to them and that instructors will be reasonable regarding grades and assignment within this initial new setting. The students should be contacted, by the instructor, via email numerous times throughout the semester and asked if they are experiencing any issues or concerns with the new software (Oââ¬â¢Neil, Fisher, Rietschel, 2014, p. 134). The continuous evaluation process will allow the college to work with the software developers to custom fit the needs of the college. References Farmer, R.
